Apple has reportedly laid off over 600 employees in the state of California after the company abandoned the AI-powered electric car project.
Ever since the creation of the company, this has been the major layoff recorded by the company since the end of the pandemic as they managed to avoid the major layoffs that affected various tech industries. The company decided to offset some of their employees weeks after canceling its self-driving car project. Six hundred and fourteen workers lost their jobs from eight different offices in Santa Clara, 58 of which were from LuxVue Technology, a microLED display tech company that was bought in 2014 by APPLE. They were working on developing microLED displays for Apple watches, but the project was brought to a halt. The rest was majorly from “Project Titan,” which was the production of self-driven electric vehicles. The company had made its long-time hardware engineer Bob Mansfield the lead engineer for the project and later went on to hire former Tesla executive Doug Field to assist him. The project was abandoned as the cost was high and it was uncertain if self-driven cars are even possible or safe. Many of these employees are said to be falling back to the Apple AI sector as they wish to employ the same insights and expertise gained in AI-powered robotics.
