Borno CP warns officers against torture, rights violations

The Nigeria Police Force in Borno State has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on torture and human rights violations, warning officers to maintain professionalism at all times.

The directive was issued on Monday, May 4, 2026, during a briefing at the police headquarters in Maiduguri, where the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, addressed tactical commanders, heads of departments, and divisional police officers.

He emphasized the importance of accountability, restraint, and respect for human dignity in all policing activities, stressing that torture and excessive use of force remain unlawful and unacceptable.

The warning comes amid growing public scrutiny of police conduct across the country, with increasing calls for stricter adherence to use-of-force regulations and respect for citizens’ rights.

According to Abdulmajid, acts of misconduct not only violate the Police Act and operational guidelines but also damage the image of the force and erode public trust, which is crucial for effective policing and intelligence gathering.

He further directed officers to strictly comply with Force Order 237 on the use of force and warned that any personnel found guilty of rights abuses would face disciplinary measures.

The commissioner also encouraged members of the public to report misconduct through official channels, including the Police Complaint Response Unit, assuring that all reports would be handled seriously and confidentially.

The command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property while upholding human rights and professional policing standards.
