The Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg has issued a safety advisory to Nigerian nationals ahead of planned nationwide anti-foreigner protests scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026.
The advisory, released on Sunday and signed by the Consul General, Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, urged citizens to remain vigilant following reports of coordinated demonstrations across all nine provinces of South Africa.
According to the mission, intelligence indicates that anti-foreigner groups have been mobilising residents through messages calling for a nationwide shutdown aimed at pressuring authorities to act against foreign nationals. The organisers reportedly claim that foreigners benefit disproportionately from the country’s resources and are demanding the removal of both documented and undocumented migrants.
The groups are also planning street marches to push for the exit of foreign nationals.
While protests are expected in several regions, the consulate noted that specific gathering points have not been confirmed in most cities. However, in Johannesburg, demonstrators are expected to assemble at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., with a memorandum likely to be presented to authorities around noon.
Security concerns have been raised over potential disruptions in major cities including Pretoria, Cape Town, and Durban.
The consulate advised Nigerians to exercise caution, avoid any confrontation with protesters, and stay updated through local media.
It also urged Nigerian business owners to consider temporarily shutting down their businesses during the protests, citing concerns that foreign-owned establishments could be targeted.
