Troops bust oil theft ring, seize fuel

Troops of the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, have intensified their grip on the Niger Delta Region, achieving notable breakthroughs against oil theft and related economic crimes.

Between April 1 and 26, 2026, coordinated operations across the region led to the arrest of nine suspected oil thieves, the dismantling of ten illegal refining sites, and the seizure of more than 130,000 litres of stolen crude oil alongside over 26,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). Equipment used in illicit refining activities was also destroyed, with recovered products estimated to be worth over ₦250 million.

In Rivers State, troops carried out multiple operations across waterways and hinterlands. Acting on credible intelligence, they intercepted an abandoned truck along the East-West Road in Ahoada East LGA, loaded with 45,000 litres of suspected stolen petroleum products. At the Orashi National Forest in Ahoada West LGA, a large reservoir holding over 35,000 litres of crude oil was discovered.

Further operations uncovered another reservoir containing over 26,000 litres of illegally refined AGO, with pipelines used for siphoning destroyed. At Ebocha in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA, troops seized 266 sacks containing about 17,760 litres of stolen products.

Additional raids at Abessa Forest exposed four drum ovens and 50 sacks holding over 3,000 litres of crude oil, while illegal waste pits were dismantled. Around Okolomade in Abua/Odual LGA, 30 sacks containing approximately 1,500 litres of crude oil were also recovered.

In Delta State, troops uncovered an illegal tapping point near Obazogbe Community in Ethiope LGA, linked to a storage pit holding over 2,700 litres of stolen petroleum.

In Akwa Ibom State, operatives discovered 45 bags of illegally refined AGO totaling about 1,350 litres in Ikot Ekpene LGA, with suspects fleeing on sight. Bayelsa State operations also saw troops maintaining pressure, effectively restricting the activities of oil thieves.

The General Officer Commanding 6 Division, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, praised the troops for their determination and urged them to maintain momentum in tackling economic sabotage across the region.
