Police order sack, trial of officers over Effurun killing

The Nigeria Police Force has announced firm disciplinary measures following the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Delta State.

Acting on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, all officers linked to the incident were promptly redeployed from the Delta State Command to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they underwent accelerated disciplinary review.

The Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) concluded its investigation, finding that the lead officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, violated Force Order 237 and other established rules guiding the use of firearms. His conduct was deemed unlawful, unprofessional, and contrary to the core duty of protecting lives.

Following these findings, the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers implicated in the incident. The Inspector-General has approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for final confirmation in accordance with due process.

After administrative formalities are completed, the affected officers will be handed over to relevant judicial authorities for prosecution over the extrajudicial killing.

Reaffirming the Force’s stance, the IGP emphasized zero tolerance for abuse of power and unlawful use of force, stressing that any officer found culpable will face strict disciplinary and legal consequences.

He also conveyed condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that justice will be pursued transparently. The police further urged the public to remain calm, reaffirming its commitment to accountability, professionalism, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
