NLC seeks termination of contributory pension scheme

Nigeria Labour Congress in Rivers State has demanded the immediate scrapping of the state’s contributory pension scheme.

The State Chairman, Alex Agwanwor, made the call during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration in Port Harcourt, citing concerns over transparency and alleged non-compliance with funding obligations by the government.

Agwanwor alleged that the scheme has suffered from poor implementation, including the government’s failure to provide counterpart funding, establish a pensions board, and properly enrol retirees.

According to him, the scheme has not adequately protected the welfare of workers in the state.

“It is our humble appeal that the scheme should be terminated and reverted to the traditional defined benefit system,” he said.

He also urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara to address issues affecting some local government workers who were reportedly excluded from the verification portal, leading to salary delays.

Agwanwor further called for the speedy implementation of the Federal Government’s revised peculiar service allowances to help cushion the impact of economic hardship on workers.

Despite the concerns raised, he commended the Fubara administration for its efforts in infrastructure development and workers’ welfare, pledging continued support for government policies and programmes.
