Nigerian Army arrests herder over alleged farm destruction in Benue

Troops of Sector 1 under Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have arrested a herder over the alleged destruction of farmland in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State.

The development was disclosed by a counter-insurgency and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, in a post shared on X.

According to him, the troops, stationed in Anule, responded to a distress report around 12:00 p.m. on May 3 regarding damage to farmland in the area.

On arrival, the soldiers reportedly found the suspect grazing cattle on cultivated land, leading to extensive destruction of crops.

The herder was subsequently apprehended and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and appropriate action.

Makama added that efforts are ongoing to prevent similar incidents and promote peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders in the community.
