A former supporter of the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, Mr Ikenna Azomchine, has led a pro-Tinubu support group to Europe to mobilise Nigerians living on the continent for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
Azomchine, Coordinator of the Obidient General Worldwide Team, said his group had made a dramatic political U-turn after reassessing the Tinubu administration and what he described as its achievements since assuming office.
Speaking in Brussels, Belgium, at the launch of the group’s 10-day European tour and inauguration of its structures, Azomchine recalled that he and other Obi supporters were in the Belgian capital in 2022 canvassing international support for the former Anambra State governor.
He said the group was now returning to Brussels for a different purpose, to campaign for Tinubu and persuade Nigerians in Europe to support the President in 2027.
“In this same Brussels in 2022, we made an appeal to the European Union to accept Peter Obi as our president and we believed that he had what it took to be president and get Nigeria out of the mess that it was,” Azomchine said.
“But I’m here on a 10-day tour and inauguration of Obidient General Worldwide Team in Europe. We are here this time to campaign for President Bola Tinubu. We are making a U-turn to support Tinubu because of the competence, credibility and all that we have seen him do.”
Azomchine, who said he had worked with both Tinubu and Obi, maintained that his assessment was based on personal experience and his observation of the two politicians.
He cited funding for tertiary education through NELFund, increased allocations to state governments and ongoing road projects as evidence of what he described as the Tinubu administration’s performance.
According to him, projects including the Jos-Akwanga road, Maiduguri-Bauchi link road and Makurdi-Enugu road demonstrated the administration’s commitment to infrastructure development.
The former Obi supporter went further to draw a direct comparison between the two politicians, declaring that Obi would not have been able to do what Tinubu was doing.
“What I studied about President Bola Tinubu will shock you, and the things he is doing will shock you even more. I can tell you that a Peter Obi cannot do it,” he said.
“I know the man I follow, and don’t forget that I have followed Peter Obi and I know the difference between both men.”
The group said the European tour would focus on mobilising Nigerians in Belgium and other European countries ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
