Vandalism of roadside trees sparks concern in Kano amid rising political tensions

Suspected vandals have destroyed newly planted roadside trees along the route leading to the Government House in Nassarawa, Kano State, sparking environmental concern and renewed debate over protection of public infrastructure.

The incident, which occurred early Monday morning, targeted trees planted by the Kano State Government as part of an ongoing urban beautification and climate sustainability programme aimed at improving greenery within Kano metropolis.

The affected area, located along a major route in the city, had recently been part of a reforestation drive designed to enhance environmental quality and reduce urban heat effects.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Dahir Hashim, confirmed the damage in a post shared on his official Facebook page, describing the act as a setback to months of careful nurturing and investment in the trees.

He noted that the trees had been cultivated for over a year before being destroyed, expressing disappointment over what he called deliberate sabotage of public environmental efforts.

While no suspects have been identified and no group has claimed responsibility, the incident comes amid heightened political tension in the state, though no evidence has been established linking it to politics.

Security authorities in Kano State have yet to issue an official statement or confirm any ongoing investigation into the matter.

Environmental advocates have condemned the act, warning that such destruction undermines climate adaptation efforts and urban renewal projects in the state.

Authorities are expected to increase surveillance in affected areas and strengthen community awareness to prevent further vandalism of public assets.
