The seven-year-old girl rescued from a suspected child abuse case in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, is receiving medical treatment and psychosocial support as authorities intensify efforts to aid her recovery and pursue justice in the case.
Our correspondent, who followed up to get updates on the matter, reports that the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare had confirmed on Monday, that the child remains in protective custody and is under close medical observation, with healthcare professionals treating her injuries while monitoring her physical and emotional recovery.
Recall that the suspect, a 36-year-old woman, Anulika Onyeanusi, had been arrested after a viral video allegedly showed her sexually abusing the minor, reportedly her daughter.
Police said four children aged two, three, six and nine were rescued, while sex toys and other items were recovered during the investigation.
Our correspondent also confirmed that the woman’s husband was also arrested and he confessed during interrogation that he had no knowledge of the ungodly act by his wife.
The case has attracted public attention following the rescue of the minor, with the state government assuring residents that every necessary step is being taken to safeguard her welfare and ensure that the ongoing investigation runs its full course.
Giving updates on the matter, the State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, expressed relief over the child’s condition, describing her safety and recovery as the ministry’s immediate priority.
She said the ministry would continue to provide comprehensive medical care and emotional support to help the girl regain stability after the traumatic experience.
Onyekesi also commended the medical personnel attending to the child for their prompt intervention, noting that their continued care remains crucial to her recovery process.
She confirmed that the Nigeria Police Force, Awada Division, is actively investigating the suspected abuse, while the ministry is working closely with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The commissioner reiterated that protecting vulnerable children remains a shared responsibility, urging residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of child abuse, neglect, exploitation or violence to the appropriate authorities.
She stressed that early reporting often makes the difference between prolonged abuse and timely intervention capable of saving a child’s life and protecting their future.
The ministry further reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening child protection efforts across Anambra State through collaboration with law enforcement agencies, healthcare providers and social welfare professionals.
It assured that the rescued girl would continue receiving the care and protection she needs as investigations progress, while the state remains committed to upholding the rights, safety and wellbeing of every child in Anambra.
