Defections legal in Nigeria- Shehu Sani on Obi, Kwankwaso alleged move to NDC

Former federal lawmaker Shehu Sani has stated that political defections and party transfers are legal and should not attract insults, especially toward politicians considering their next political moves.

In a post on his X handle on Saturday, Sani reacted to speculation that African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftains, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, may be considering a move to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the next election cycle.

Using a football analogy, he wrote:

“Transfers are legally permitted. Allow Peter and Kwankwaso to leave Athletico Madrid to Nothingham Forest FC. It’s wrong to insult them.”

His comment comes amid growing political speculation following the recent All Opposition Political Party Leaders’ summit in Ibadan, Oyo State, where several key opposition figures met.

Since the summit, Peter Obi has reportedly been absent from subsequent ADC meetings, fuelling rumours of a possible defection. Rabiu Kwankwaso’s absence from recent party engagements has also added to the speculation.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is said to be strengthening his position within the ADC ahead of potential presidential ambitions in 2027.
