The Director of Sports of the Students’ Union Government at the University of Cross River State, Solomon Nya, has reportedly died in a road accident alongside two other persons.
The accident occurred on the evening of May 1 in Odukpani, a community on the outskirts of Calabar. Several other occupants of the vehicle were also said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries.
An eyewitness told Vanguard that the Students’ Union Government President was among those injured in the crash and is currently receiving treatment at the emergency unit of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
“The SUG President is unconscious as I speak with you now. He is in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital emergency unit, and we pray he makes it,” the source said.
According to the eyewitness, some of the injured victims suffered serious injuries, while the bodies of the deceased, including the Director of Sports, have been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
The source described the incident as tragic and expressed concern over the condition of the injured, especially the SUG President, who was said to be in critical condition.
As of the time of filing this report, the university management had yet to release an official statement on the incident, which happened during the public holiday period.
