The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Thursday welcomed a delegation from the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, reaffirming the police’s readiness to work closely with healthcare professionals.
The delegation, led by NANNM National President, Comrade Haruna Mamman, visited to enhance cooperation between both institutions and raise concerns over the growing menace of unqualified medical practitioners in the country.
Also present at the meeting were members of the Force Management Team, the Director of Force Medical Services, AIG Nkechi Eze, senior police officers, and key executives of the association, including Comrades Bornbless Obasi and Jama Medan, alongside other representatives.
During discussions, Comrade Mamman expressed serious concern about the increasing number of illegal medical operators, noting that many unsuspecting Nigerians fall victim to their activities, which endangers lives and damages the credibility of the healthcare sector. He appealed to the police leadership for stronger intervention to address the issue.
In response, IGP Disu acknowledged the vital contributions of nurses and midwives to national healthcare.
He compared their responsibilities to those of police officers, emphasizing shared values such as professionalism, compassion, resilience, and dedication to serving people in critical moments.
The police chief further assured the association of the Force’s commitment to safeguarding public health and strengthening trust.
He encouraged the establishment of a direct communication channel to support coordinated efforts in identifying and shutting down illegal medical facilities.
The meeting ended with a renewed pledge for partnership aimed at protecting lives and improving service delivery across both sectors.
