Six Alleged Market Extortionists Remanded in Anambra

Six individuals accused of illegally collecting money from traders have been remanded in a correctional facility in Onitsha, Anambra State.

The suspects were brought before the court after being apprehended by operatives of the Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency (SASA) during a targeted crackdown across Onitsha and nearby areas.

According to the agency’s spokesperson, Karen James, those arrested include Monday Chukwuka from Ebonyi State; Sunday Chinweze from Anambra State; Uche Nweke from Ebonyi State; Ekene Onyedimma from Imo State; Anakwe Uchenna from Enugu State; and Ugochukwu Ukadike from Abia State.

She explained that the group allegedly engaged in unauthorized levy collection and extortion of traders and commercial operators within the city.

Preliminary findings suggest the suspects acted independently and were not affiliated with any government-recognized authority.

After their arraignment before a Magistrate Court in Onitsha North Local Government Area, the court ordered their remand pending further proceedings.

Bail was granted with strict conditions, including a ₦200,000 bond, a ₦300,000 penalty, and a requirement for a Level 17 civil servant to stand as surety. The case has been adjourned until July 1, 2026.

SASA reaffirmed its commitment to clamping down on illegal levies and extortion, emphasizing its resolve to safeguard lawful business activities and maintain order across Anambra State.
